Intent 

At Maltby Lilly Hall Academy, we believe that it is important for all our children to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them.  The aim of Religious Education in our school is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of different religions represented in Great Britain; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and behaviour, develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.   We encourage our children to express their curiosity and ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.  It is our intent that our children will become resilient, accepting, mindful and inquisitive learners. 

Implementation 

We use the Agreed Syllabus for RE in Rotherham (2022) as the basis for our curriculum.  At our school it has been agreed that having taken into account the requirements and guidelines presented in the Agreed Syllabus, the following religions have been selected for study:

• Christianity (EYFS, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2)
• Judaism (Key Stage 1)
• Islam (Key Stage 2)
• Hinduism (Key Stage 2)

RE is taught across school in weekly, one hour lessons.  In Years 1 to 6 the key areas of learning (below) are implemented through the programs of study which are used alongside the syllabus. Each year group covers a topic every half term or full term and these are organised to ensure continuity and progression throughout each Key Stage. In EYFS children learn about and become aware of different religions and ways of life, through stories, talk, learning through play and sharing their experiences. 

Children at our school will have the opportunity to develop skills from three key areas as described in the Agreed Syllabus (below).

Impact 

Through RE lessons pupils learn to articulate clear and coherent accounts of their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to have different views, values and ways of life. RE prepares children and young people to live in a local society, but also in a region, a national community and the world as a whole. RE teaching at Maltby Lilly Hall helps to develop pupils understanding of the rich diversity of Rotherham, Yorkshire, the UK and the world.
